What You Can Actually Do Before There's Any Land Yet

There's a question we get a lot, and it's a fair one: if there's no farm yet, what exactly is there to be part of?

It's worth being straight about where things actually stand. Rooted Common Ground Farms is a proposed network — land we're working towards holding in trust for community growing, wellbeing and regeneration, run by Rooted Networks Ltd as we work towards Community Interest Company status. We're not a charity, and we're not going to pretend to be one. No plot has been acquired yet. Nobody should read anything here as a claim otherwise.

But "not yet" isn't the same as "nothing." Here's how we think this could actually work, in the order it would likely happen.

It starts as a relationship, not a purchase

The old way of thinking about land is that you find a plot, you buy it, and then you figure out what to do with it. We're trying to build this the other way round. The people come first — the ones who'd actually use the space, who'd know what a safe, trauma-aware growing space needs to feel like from the inside, not just on a planning document. Land held in trust only means something if there's already a community shaped around it, ready to receive it. So the early work isn't land-hunting. It's building that community: the people, the trust, the shared sense of what "better together" actually looks like on the ground.

Nobody has to wait for a gate to open

One thing we're clear on: you don't need to own land to belong to it, and you shouldn't need a finished farm to belong to this either. Right now, that means following the vision as it develops, telling us what would make a space feel safe enough to show up to, and being part of the conversation about how decisions get made before there's anything to decide about yet. It sounds small. It isn't. A network built without listening first is just a masterplan with better branding, and we'd rather move slower and get that part right.

Small and real, before large and managed

If and when there's a first plot, the plan isn't to unveil a finished, polished facility. It's closer to: one space, worked out properly with the people using it, that actually works — not a five-year masterplan sitting on paper looking impressive to nobody in particular. A garden doesn't ask what's wrong with you before it lets you dig, and we don't want to build something so managed and so scaled-up that it starts asking anyway. One plot that genuinely does what it's meant to do matters more than ten plots that look right on a map.

Held, not owned — from the beginning

Whatever land does come into this, the whole point is that it wouldn't be sold out from under the people who depend on it. That's not a detail we'll figure out later; it's baked into how it has to be structured from day one, which is part of why the CIC route matters to us — a legal shape built around purpose rather than profit, not a charity, but not a business built to extract from the land or the people on it either.

Growing something, even before there's soil

You don't have to be outdoorsy to belong here, and right now, you don't even need to be near a piece of land. What you can do today is help shape what this becomes — through this blog, through getting in touch, through simply following along and telling other people it exists. That matters more than it sounds like it should. A network held together only by good intentions doesn't hold. One held together by people who actually showed up, even at this early stage, has a chance.

We'd rather tell you honestly that we're at the beginning than dress up a proposal as something further along than it is. The land will come when it comes, and when it does, we want it to land on something already real: a community that was there before the gate went up, ready to walk through it together.
