How we're structured.

Three bodies, one mission. The Community raises the money. The Land Trust holds the land. Wellbeing turns it into community benefit.

Rooted Common Ground Community (CBS)

Our intended fundraising and outreach engine (not yet registered) — a non-charitable Community Benefit Society

Raises money through: Community shares (withdrawable share capital)
Voluntary contributions
Outreach and fundraising campaigns
Does not: Hold any land
Run the platform or programmes
Passes money to the Land Trust as: A grant — no repayment, no interest (the safest option)
Or a loan — repaid gently over time, with interest optional and low
Share withdrawals: If a shareholder wants their money back, the Community handles it from its own funds
The Land Trust is never responsible for share withdrawals, and the land is never put at risk to meet one
Governance: One member, one vote — regardless of shares held
Open to any person aged 16+ resident in the county who holds at least one membership share
This vote covers Community affairs only (fundraising priorities, outreach) — not land, residency, or governance of the Land Trust

Rooted Common Ground Land Trust

The anchor — our intended land-holding body (not yet registered)

Holds: The land itself — buys it and holds it for long-term community benefit
Food forests, fruit & nut orchards, and perennial food systems
Timber and log production, tree nurseries
Soil regeneration, ecological restoration, water systems and habitat
Governance: A small, trauma-aware Stewardship Council — not an open public vote
A deliberate design choice, to keep sensitive land and residency decisions insulated from a wide membership vote
Protection: Statutory asset lock — the land cannot be casually sold or repurposed
If ever wound up, the land passes to another body with a similar protective purpose
The land is never put at risk to meet a Community share withdrawal

Mission: The relief of poverty, financial hardship, and deprivation; the advancement of education through land-based skill-building; the advancement of environmental protection through sustainable land management; and the advancement of community development — delivered on land the Land Trust holds in trust for the county.

Rooted Common Ground is operated by Rooted Networks Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. Our intention is to establish three linked but legally and financially separate bodies: Rooted Common Ground Community — a non-charitable Community Benefit Society that raises money through community shares and passes it to the Land Trust as grants or loans, without ever holding land itself; Rooted Common Ground Land Trust — which buys and holds the land under a statutory asset lock, governed by a small, trauma-aware Stewardship Council; and Rooted Common Ground Wellbeing — a registered charity (a CIO) that runs the platform and programmes on land leased or licensed from the Land Trust on favourable terms. Keeping all three legally distinct is what protects the land: the Land Trust is never responsible for share withdrawals, and the land is never put at risk to meet one. None is registered yet.
