The Rooted Common Ground Open Build Specification

Important safety notice. The Rooted Common Ground Heating Specification is currently being reviewed by a qualified heating engineer and is not yet certified. It will be published here once that review is complete. When published it is intended for use only by Approved Builders, is not a substitute for professional advice, and is provided without warranty. Always follow current building, fire, and gas-safety regulations and consult a qualified professional before building or installing any heater.

The design

Based on a simple enclosed waste-oil burner design using:

  • A steel ammunition box or equivalent airtight steel enclosure
  • A glass or heat-resistant front panel for flame visibility
  • An intake pipe for air supply (computer-style fan powered)
  • An exhaust pipe for combustion gases (exits through wall or window — mandatory)
  • A simple wick-based burner using vegetable oil as fuel
  • A temperature-rated seal on all joints
  • External surface temperature limits to prevent burns

Safety requirements — non-negotiable for all builds

  • Exhaust pipe must exit the building — no indoor exhaust under any circumstances
  • A BS EN 50291 certified carbon monoxide alarm must be installed in the same room at time of installation
  • The heater must not be left unattended when burning
  • A fire extinguisher must be accessible in the room
  • Installation must be documented with photos and signed off by a Community Pillar or admin before use

The full specification will include

  • Full materials list with dimensions
  • Step-by-step build guide with photographs
  • Safety checklist
  • Installation checklist
  • Inspection checklist for Pillar sign-off
